NTNU and NPRA has long collaborated on intelligent traffic lights. Now the 48 of traffic lights in the city equipped with technology that tells the cars when the lights switches so that the driver is aware of the speed recommendation towards traffic lights.
The aim is better, safer and more environmentally friendly traffic.
– it is the green curve on the far left for speedometret as recommended speed, the information is intentionally made small that it should not interfere unnecessarily, says Erik Israelsson in Volvo.
– Will improve the flow
Chief Engineer of the Transport Office, Ørjan Tveit think the system has many benefits.
– As a driver, you can easily figure out how to adapt his speed towards an intersection. Then you can run quieter, which will be better for the driver and the environment. One can then follow a green wave through several intersections, so that one gets a better speed profile on the road says Tveit.
Many automakers are now working intensively on technology to develop self-driving cars. The technology is being tested in Trondheim can be an important part of developing framtias city driving. Among them is Ford that has come all the way from Gothenburg to test the technology in Trondheim traffic.
– The reason why we do it here in Trondheim is because NPRA has connected technology in many of the lights here in Trondheim . Then it will be easier for us at Volvo to get try out the technology in our cars, says Israelsson
– More digitized traffic
NPRA think traffic is going to change to become more digitized. Tveit believes it is important to be early with digitization in Trondheim.
– I think traffic is going to be more digitized ahead, and then it’s important that we’re early to get adapted to it. Then it will be printed and good for everyone, says Tveit.
