Energigründere to the final - Ringerikes Sheet

This coming Monday gather energy finalists from around the country for three days of tussle in the technology city of Trondheim.

Nearly 3,500 students from high schools in Norway participated last fall on local entrepreneur camps where they have solved various tasks within energy and climate.

Students Life-Therese Schjetlein, Kristoffer Kvannli, Robin Oskar Brekke, Ingrid Skogeng Hansen and Marthe Boe Rustand from Ringerike high school qualified for the final in Trondheim by being named the best in Buskerud and should therefore represent our county at the National Innovation Camp.

Realistic and innovative

None of the competitors will know in advance what mission they are to compete. The students can then one day in which to work out solutions that both have to be realistic, innovative and forward-looking. In addition to convince the jury, consisting of professionals in energy technology.

It is the sixth consecutive year that Enova and Young Enterprise challenge youth and organizes camp for high school students.

– One of Enova’s most important tasks is to help develop new energy and climate technology. We are facing major challenges relating to energy and climate, and the development of new technologies is essential to meet these. Facebook launches Paper - Adresseavisen

As teknologia.no wrote last week there have been rumors about a new Facebook application called Paper.

It was the site Re / code who first wrote about the application, which supposedly was to be a sort of Flipboard competitor, writes teknologia.no.

Flipboard is an application for mobile devices that allows you to collect news from a variety of sources and have them presented as a magazine. The service has since 2010 been downloaded over 90 million times and is a very popular application, largely because of a visually elegant interface.

The Verge: – Paper replace Facebook’s hovedapp

Now Re / code their speculation proved to be true. Facebook has in fact announced a brand new mobile application called Paper. This is an application that allows you to get news presented in a magazine format, but not only that: Paper also shows updates from news stream.

According to technology website The Verge, Paper can almost replace Facebook’s default application.

– Once you’ve tried it, you will probably never open Facebooks standardapp again. Although not copy every single feature that Facebook’s hovedapp has, Paper contains enough to fill most of the needs that people have. And the (Paper) is simply much, much better, writes The Guardian.

Away with buttons – in with swiping

Facebook has released an introductory video (see bottom of the case) where we see Paper used, and here there are several features to grab in. Firstly, we see that the paper makes use of swiping a much greater extent than Facebook’s hovedapp. There are not many buttons – instead swipe one finger to navigate around.

The second most obvious thing to mention is of course the interface. Here is the content of focus, especially photos. One cool feature is that you can tilt the phone to see you around photos. This function calls the Facebook “Ken turns.”

Unlike Facebook’s hovedapp scroll down not in your power – here is more like a newspaper – you scroll sideways. This is clearly to give the magazine feel. Mark Zückerberg’ve on several occasions expressed that Facebook is a kind personalized newspaper.

You can also write status updates, share photos and links in the Paper. One difference from Facebook’s main applications is however that this will be a visually prettier and more intuitive process.

In USA

However, there are a few bad news on paper. Firstly, it seems that Facebook has just developed an iPhone version. Something strange – after all we live in 2014 and Android’ve got a strong position in the mobile market. And what about Windows Phone? Boring is also there in the first place just seems to be launched in the United States. Paper launches 3 February.

It will definitely expand to more platforms and land eventually, but when it happens, just speculation.

Google Motorola sells to China - Aftenposten

Google bought Motorola for 77 billion in 2012, but sold the same year away part of the Group of 14 billion.

Lenovo kunngjorde i går at selskapet har inngått en avtale med Google om kjøp av mobilprodusenten Motorola Mobility for til sammen 2,91 milliarder dollar. Beløpet betales delvis som aksjer i Lenovo og over en periode på tre år.

Lenovo er allerede blant verdens ledende smartmobilleverandører, men har innen dette segmentet liten tilstedeværelse i Vesten. Oppkjøpet gjøres for dels for å styrke posisjonen i denne delen av verden. Motorola har en forholdsvis sterk posisjon i både Nord- og Latin-Amerika, samt et visst fotfeste i deler av Europa.

Pantenter
Lenovo er som ganske fersk mobilprodusent opptatt av å få tilgang til patenter, noe selskapet kan bruke i forsvar ved patentsøksmål fra mer etablerte aktører. Avtalen innebærer at mer enn 2000 patenter overføres til Lenovo. De resterende mer enn 15 000 resterende patentene som Motorola Mobility eide da selskapet ble kjøpt av Google for 12,5 milliarder dollar, beholdes etter alt å dømme Google. Dermed er ikke prisforskjellen på 9,59 milliarder dollar et rent tap for Google.

Det at Google selger Motorola Mobility er ikke spesielt overraskende. Selv om Google gjort betydelige endringer i mobilselskapet, har det ikke lykkes i å øke omsetningen til selskapet i noen større grad. Dessuten har det alltid blitt sett på som litt uheldig at Android-leverandøren Google eier sin egen mobilleverandør. Men Google skal ha holdt løftene om ikke å favorisere Motorola Mobility i den forbindelse.

Mer overraskende er det at det er Lenovo som er kjøperen. Selskapet har nettopp kjøpt IBM avdeling for x86-baserte servere.

– Lenovo har ekspertise og resultater til å kunne skalere Motorola Mobility til en stor aktør innen Android-økosystemet. Denne avgjørelsen vil gjøre det mulig for Google å bruke energien vår på å drive innovasjonsprosessen på tvers av Android-økosystemet, til fordel for smartmobilbrukere overalt, sier Google-sjef Larry Page i en uttalelse.

Motorola-direktør Dennis Woodside sier at Motorola Mobility, som en del av Lenovo, nå har fått en klar og rask bane mot målet om å nå de neste 100 millioner menneskene med mobilt Internett.

– Med de nylige lanseringene av Moto X og Moto G har vi et voldsomt moment akkurat nå, og Lenovos maskinvareekspertise og globale rekkevidde vil bare bidra til å akselerere dette, sier Woodside.

Google buys mysterious Deep Mind - digi.no

Google bekreftet søndag at de har kjøpt privateide DeepMind Technologies, et London-basert selskap som oppgir å være «cutting edge» innen kunstig intelligens.

Bekreftelsen kom etter at Recode meldte at selskapet var solgt for 400 millioner dollar.

Andre medier melder at kjøpesummen er høyere. Google skal ha betalt mer enn 500 millioner dollar, ifølge The Information, som skriver at også Facebook var i forhandlinger om et oppkjøp.

Nettstedet skriver at Google som ledd i oppkjøpet har sagt seg villige til å etablere et eget etikk-råd, som skal forsikre at kunstig intelligens-teknologien de nå har sikret seg «ikke blir misbrukt».

Lite er kjent om DeepMind, foruten at det er en oppstartbedrift grunnlagt i 2012 av sjakkgeniet Demis Hassabis med doktorgrad i kognitiv nevrovitenskap, sammen med Shane Legg og Mustafa Suleyman.

37 år gamle Hassabis har en lengre artikkel om seg på Wikipedia, hvor det blant annet fremgår at han var et såkalt vidunderbarn med ekstreme sjakkferdigheter. Han har også fartstid som utvikler og spilldesigner.

– 50 ansatte
Ifølge Recodes kilder handler oppkjøpet i stor grad om tilgang til de ansattes kompetanse. Selv om DeepMind har gått under radaren på de fleste, blir selskapet beskrevet som en formidabel aktør innen kunstig intelligens. De skal ha bygget opp en stab på over 50 ansatte.

Google har utviklet førerløse biler og er blitt en sentral aktør innen robotteknologi etter en rekke oppkjøp de siste årene. Kunstig intelligens spiller en opplagt rolle her, men kan like gjerne ha anvendelsesområder i en lang rekke av søkegigantens øvrige prosjekter og produkter.

Det blir bare spekulasjoner, men kanskje oppkjøpet er del av en plan om ta opp kampen mot IBMs Watson?

Apple admits crash issue in iOS 7 - Dagbladet.no

Mac turns 30 - DinSide

DinSide Den er elsket og hatet, og i dag fyller den 30 år. Vi snakker om Apple sin Mac, eller Macintosh. Og allerede fra starten tenkte selskapet, med Steve Jobs og Steve Wozniak i fronten, annerledes enn den store hurven.

For den originale Apple Macintosh som dukket opp på markedet 24. januar 1984 var en kompakt alt-i-ett-datamaskin, der alt var innebygd i skjermen. Operativsystemet var grafisk og ikon-basert, og kom ett helt år før Windows 1.0 ble lansert.

Billig, den gang

Maskinen ble populær, men ble for radikal for mange. Prisen var derimot ikke så ille etter datidens målestokk, 2.495 dollar kostet den (rundt 20.000 kr i 1984-kurs), og for det fikk du en maskin med 9-tommer sort/hvit-skjerm, 128 KB RAM og ingen harddisk.

Den bar uansett bud om hvilken vei utviklingen ville gå, slik mange av Apples produkter har gjort opp gjennom historien – deriblant iPod, MacBook Air, Mac Mini, iPad og ikke minst iPhone.

Steve Jobs var nøkkelen

Steve Jobs fikk mye av æren for utformingen av den første Macintoshen, men fikk sparken fra selskapet han var med å starte allerede året etter.

I årene som fulgte kom flere oppfølgere til den originale Macintoshen, men de store suksessene kom ikke før Steve Jobs var tilbake i Apple i 1997.

Alt-i-ett-prinsippet ble da videreført med lanseringen av de fargeglade Apple iMac-ene som vi husker fra like før årtusenskiftet. Så kom flatskjermene, og i dag er iMac-en tynn og lekker, med skjermer på 21,5 og 27 tommer.

Rumors are swirling about Apple's next phone - BergensAvisen

Reputation Bourse ends almost never grind out new predictions about Apple’s upcoming products.

We have heard of the legendary ITV for several years and smart clock iWatch still conspicuous by their absence, but something we can almost guarantee is that Apple will release a new phone this year.

phone will probably be called iPhone 6, and according to the latest reports from the Chinese analyst Sun Changxu, it will come in two screen sizes, both larger than the current 4-inch iPhone 5S.

TWO VERSIONS, BOTH MAJOR

In an interview with the Chinese site QQ Tech says Changxu the iPhone 6 will probably have a 4.7 inch large screen with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels.

He also believes, without really explaining why, that Apple will release an even bigger Iphone shortly afterwards, this time with a 5.7-inch large screen, which throws it right into phablet territory.

We heard similar rumors last fall, as several analysts, also known as the mobile industry’s fortune tellers, said that the next iPhone would become a phablet.

APPLE reveals nothing

Apple has naturally enough not said anything about what we can expect from them, or how the next iPhone will look like.

When the iPhone into an agreement with the phone company China Mobile last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook asked about the next iPhone would have a bigger or flexible screen. All he would say was that we could look forward to some “fine” patches in future:

– We never talk about future things. We work with wonderful things, but we will keep them secret. That way you will be much happier when you see them.

Haugesund/Oslo (NTB-Hans Botnen Eide): Politiet starter ny etterforskning av drapet på Birgitte Tengs. 17-åringen ble funnet voldtatt og drept i nærheten av sitt hjem i Kopervik på Karmøy i 1995.

- Vi skal sjekke tipsene som er kommet inn i saken de siste årene og kontakte flere personer. Dette er ikke en gjenåpning, men en begrenset etterforskning, sier politiadvokat Thor Buberg i Haugaland og Sunnhordland politidistrikt til Stavanger Aftenblad.

I fjor ba Tengs’ fetter, som først ble dømt og senere frikjent i saken, om innsyn i politidistriktets behandling av tips. Da han fikk avslag, anmeldte han politidistriktet til Spesialenheten for politisaker. Nå håper han at et annet politidistrikt kan fortsette etterforskningen.

Fetteren ble pågrepet og siktet i saken to år etter drapet. Da han ble frikjent, opprettholdt lagmannsretten erstatningskravet på 100.000 kroner til Tengs’ foreldre. Den norske staten ble senere dømt i Menneskerettighetsdomstolen i Strasbourg til å betale ham 1,2 millioner kroner i erstatning og oppreisning etter straffesaken. (©NTB)

First Impressions: Samsung Galaxy TabPRO - DinSide

DinSide Nettbrett-salget har virkelig tatt av, og mange av de store produsentene viste fram årets nyheter under CES-messen i Las Vegas tidligere denne måneden.

En av dem var Samsung, som sammen med Apple “eier” storparten av nettbrett-markedet. De viste fram hele fire nye brett i den ferske Galaxy TabPRO og NotePRO-serien.

Microsoft-tilnærming?

PRO indikerer at brettene byr på litt mer funksjonalitet enn standard Tab-brett, med fokus på produktivitet. For alle TabPRO-brettene kommer blant annet med forhåndsinstallert Office-pakke med tekstbehandler, regneark og presentasjonsverktøy som tilsvarer programmene du finner i Microsoft Office. Grensesnittet i programmene er svært likt Microsoft Office 2013, og de skal dessuten være nær 100 prosent kompatible med Office-filer, ifølge Samsung selv.

En annen litt oppsiktsvekkende nyhet er at det klassiske Android (4.4)-grensesnittet er blitt erstattet av noe som minner mistenkelig om noe vi har sett før. Når du skrur på brettene blir du nemlig møtt av en hjemskjerm som består av fliser i forskjellige størrelser. Flisene er levende og kan vise nye eposter, bildesamlingen din, dato, tid, temperatur, eller ganske enkelt være snarveier til apper.

Høres det kjent ut? Dette er så nært fliseløsningen i Windows 8/Phone 8 som det nesten er mulig å komme.

Flisene kan selvfølgelig organiseres, flyttes og endres på som du selv ønsker, og bak dem finner du fortsatt det klassiske Android-grensesnittet som vi kjenner fra eldre Samsung-brett.

Potent 8,4-tommer

Vi har fått leke oss med et tidlig produksjonseksemplar av det minste brettet i TabPRO-serien, med en skjerm på 8,4 tommer. Det er altså 0,5 tommer større enn iPad Mini. Ifølge Samsung ville produksjonskostnadene være de samme enten man gikk for 7,9 eller 8,4 tommer. I tillegg kommer brettet med 10,1 og 12,2″ skjerm.

Låsebildet med sine sterke farger får fram det beste i skjermen.

På innsiden sitter en av de kraftigste nettbrettprosessorene på markedet, en firekjernet Snapdragon 800 som kjører på 2,3 GHz. Det sørger for at brettet løser alle oppgaver kjapt og effektivt.

Brettet har to kameraer, ett på 8 og ett på 2 megapiksler. For øvrig har brettet fått støtte for trådløse AC-nett, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, Glonass og en rekke andre teknologier.

Det er utstyrt med 2 GB RAM og leveres med enten 16 eller 32 GB lagringsplass. Dette kan utvides med et microSD-kort på inntil 64GB. Du finner flere tekniske detaljer her.

Designmessig følger den i samme spor som de siste Tab-brettene, vårt eksemplar har hvit ramme rundt skjermen og hvit, skinnimitert bakside.

Mer “retina” enn iPad Mini Retina

Størrelsesmessig er brettet 12,8 x 21,9 x 0,72 cm og veier 331 gram. Til sammenligning er iPad Mini 13,4 x 20 x 0,72 cm og veier 308 gram. Ganske sammenlignbar i størrelsen altså, men iPad Mini er litt bredere på grunn av annet bredde:høydeforhold på skjermen.

Det som er vel så interessant er at iPad Minis “Retina”-skjerm har en oppløsning på 2.048 x 1.536 piksler, mens TabPRO har 2.560 x 1.600 piksler, som gir en høyere pikseltetthet og dermed enda skarpere bilde. Vi beveger oss nå ned på nivåer som neppe skilles med det blotte øye på normal betraktningsavstand.

Selv med nesa helt inni brettet er det nærmest umulig å oppdage pikslene.

Vi kan uansett slå fast at “Super clear LCD”-skjermen på TabPRO 8,4 er eksepsjonelt bra, uansett vinkel. Den fungerer også bra utendørs i vanskelige lysforhold. Berøringsfølsomheten er også som ventet helt ypperlig.

Per i dag representerer dette det beste som er å oppdrive på nettbrett-skjermfronten, men vi vet at det kommer brett med OLED-skjermer senere i år. I teorien betyr det i hvert fall enda bedre dynamisk omfang under alle lysforhold, samtidig som strømbruken holdes på et minimum.

Kommer tilbake med mer

Blandingen av gammelt og nytt grensesnitt har muligens gjort brukopplevelsen noe mer fragmentert på TabPRO enn tidligere, men dette skal vi komme tilbake til når vi har fått testet et ferdig eksemplar.

Brettene blir tilgjengelig i uke 9 (siste uke i februar), og vi kommer tilbake med full test når disse er blitt tilgjengelig. Prisen på 8,4-tommeren er ventet å ligge på rundt 3.000 kroner veiledende for 16 GB-utgaven. 4G-versjonen vil koste en tusenlapp mer.

Flest uhell med dyr

3000 bønder har svart på en spørreundersøkelse.

De fleste ulykkene i landbruket skjer i forbindelse med håndtering av store dyr, traktor og tunge maskiner. Men kontakt med dyr er den aktiviteten som bidrar til den største andelen ulykker, står det i rapporten.

Mange av uhellene skjer når dyrene skal flyttes.

Det som ofte skjer er at dyret kan stange, sparke eller tråkke på bonden. Også venner, familie og barn er involvert i noen av ulykkene med dyr på gården.

Ingen krav om kontroll

Justervesenet har kontrollert politiets lasere siden 1999, og det er faktisk ingen selvfølge.

Per i dag finnes det nemlig ingen lovpålagte krav om at fartsmålere – verken politiets laserfartsmålere eller vegvesenets fartsmålere – skal kontrolleres. Politiet og Vegvesenet har imidlertid tatt initiativ til at begge disse typene måleinstrumenter skal gjennomgå en årlig kontroll.

Justervesenets kontroll kommer i tillegg til de rutinene som politiet selv har til kontroll av apparatet, både før og etter bruk.

- Politiet har sine egne rutiner for å sjekke siktet. Men det er instrumentet som er i fokus her. Vi får det inn til kontroll, sjekker ulike ting, og sender det ut igjen med et kontrollbevis. Oppdages det feil, så blir det rettet hos produsent eller leverandør før det blir kontrollert på nytt, sier overingeniør Jan-Erik Holmen hos Justervesenet til DinSide.

Kontrollen er årlig, og det utstedes et kontrollbevis. Dette medfører at instrumentet kun er gyldig fra den dato kontrollbeviset utstedes og ett år fremover.

Hvis du skulle lure: Om politilaserne

Andre feilkilder

Selv om et måleinstrument er kontrollert og funnet i orden hos Justervesenet, kan det fremdeles være feilkilder forbundet med bruken.
