Relatives are hoping new technology can solve Winton murder – NRK

Late Night October 22, 2000 Marit Ødegaard killed in his own home in Winton in Marker municipality in Østfold. The day after she was found by her daughter, Bente Ødegaard Mountains.

– I looked right into the kitchen to the right. There lay my mom on the floor with tape before your eyes, and I saw that she was dead, says Bente.

Marit Ødegaard ran the gas station on the Swedish border in Winton, and police believe she was robbed of turnover. The murder was never solved.

– As the only family member I have read the autopsy report, so I know what happened with my mom. I will not put that killer to go away and not be punished for what he has done, says Bente.



Reconsideration of DNA traces



No one is currently charged with the murder that happened almost 15 years ago.

Public Health (FHI) developed a new chemical process to examine the skin cells, which led to an arrest in Kristin case in Larvik.

Given that, Østfold Police now taken contact with Public Health to obtain a reconsideration of the DNA traces found at the site where Marit Ødegaard was killed.

– We have asked for a consideration of whether there is reason to make new analyzes of the material we already submitted. We also asked whether it might be appropriate to submit material that we have saved but not submitted, says communications consultant in Østfold Police, Øysten Stavdal Paulsen told Aftenposten.

It gives the family hope.

– I think it’s good. It will be fantastic to get peace, we think about it all the time, says Bente.

Hoping for clarification

A man who was in his late 30s was charged with the murder, but police found no technical evidence that linked him to the case. It was never prosecuted him, and he received compensation for the criminal proceedings.

The village residents have been marked by the murder and that the killer was never caught.

– Who killed Marit? That question has existed for many years, says Agnar Homes Braten, who was mayor of Marker Municipality when the murder happened.

– It was a case we certainly expected. There was a shock for the whole population.

15 years in suspense enough, seem daughter. She now hopes that it might get answers to who was responsible.
