You’ve probably come across it in your Facebook feed already. Videos where you can look around a room or landscape simply by moving the phone. With special glasses and headphones the experience changed better.
Under Norwegian Hospitality Association’s annual conference in Svolvær this week, given the industry a foretaste of what they can expect when Bjørn-Morten Nerland Stargate Media showed off some of the they have worked with.
as the head of a company that offers an interactive 360 degree video productions for both mobile web and various installations, he is in no doubt about the potential that technology offers the travel industry.
– I think in the highest degree that the travel industry will drive the VR 360 video forward. This technology provides an incredibly strong sense of being present at a destination, says Nerland.
– You take on some glasses, and then you are suddenly in a new environment . Around you see the mountains and fjords. Behind you is maybe some fishermen, and a box of fish. You are present, and meets the environment in a completely different way than you do with traditional flat.
– Great potential
In order to create these interactive productions, the company has Nerland developed purpose-built rigs that are not necessarily cheap. So far, it is costly and time consuming to make VR in a proper way.
However, the technology is becoming more accessible. Through various apps ordinary people can upload their own images and make them interactive.
The new phones will make it even easier to share unique travel experiences online and social media. This makes the technology “a gift for the travel industry”, says marketing strategic leader John-Steve Linløkken in North Norwegian tourism.
– This has great potential. One gets a totally different opportunity to experience a place before visiting it, which can help more people discover the unique nature we have in Norway.
You mean this is the future
A major player in the experience-based tourism in Lofoten, the company XXLofoten. Sales Manager May-Britt Paulsen is aware that this is the future.
– New technology gives us new opportunities to share experiences much greater extent than before. Not only we, but also consumers, as well as greatly contribute to the promotion of the region, said Paulsen.
They have even invested a lot of video content already, and have not handed out a single brochure of 8 years. For a company that is dedicated to making nature accessible to guests, the VR and 360 degree video eventually be a natural next step.
– Adventures in time and trigger where people will travel.
