Vatsfjorden (Dagbladet): Yesterday Dagbladet wrote that the two research institutes Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) and the National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) has found huge variety of toxic levels in fish near AF Decom’s opphoggingsanlegg of old oil platforms in Vatsfjorden.
While Niva, which is engaged by oil junkyard, find very low concentrations of the dangerous exposure to PCBs in fish, can NIFES more PCBs in fish than ever before are measured in the area.
NIFES is committed by an individual who is concerned about the impact the activities of AF Decom by Raunes in Vatsfjorden may have on marine life.
Dagbladet has previously revealed that Niva has very close ties to its principal .
Active fisherman
In March 2012, let Niva cards on the table and admitted that they fired their previous try fishing Arve Hersdal after AF Decom had asked them about it.
AF Decom would have Hersdal removed, after he had publicly expressed concern about the consequences of its disposal of disused offshore installations may have on fisheries and community.
Nivas admission came after Dagbladet first revealed that the department spoke false when claiming that there were scientific reasons why they would not renew the contract for the fisherman who for three years has provided seafood for miljøovervåkingsprogrmmet Niva performs on behalf of AF Decom in Vatsfjorden.
In May 2012, had Niva criticized by the National Research Ethics Committee for Science and Technology (COMPONENT) for her performance in the case of the sacked fisherman.
Secrecy
Neither former Niva-fishing Hersdal or other Dagbladet spoke with in the Lower Vats know who is now performing try fishing for Niva. And Niva would simply not disclose it.
– We respect fisherman’s desire for anonymity. He does not want to end up in the media spotlight, says Niva Director Greta Bentzen.
In the local community is the rumor that Niva shall have entered into a contract with an angler, as commercial fishermen in the area do not know who who now fishes for the research.
This rejects Bentzen categorically.
– The fisherman is a fisherman, says Niva director.
Denied access
Yesterday Niva admitted to Dagbladet that the fish they have analyzed for contaminants is significantly smaller than fish NIFES have investigated Vatsfjorden. The smaller the sample the fish are, the lower concentrations of PCBs and mercury will be found in it.
Dagbladet has asked Niva for access to the underlying data for the sample fished their for years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, this has Niva rejected.
Former Level-Arve fish Hersdal have done to try fishing for NIFES. According to the private client choice fell on Hersdal for getting the most comparable results with the previous year.
– Niva has not consulted me at all about how I have previously done the job for them, says Hersdal.
