Invited by Ban Ki-moon
Norwegian Prime Minister will play a key role at the climate summit in New York this week. The summit will lay the foundation for the climate summit in Paris in December next year.
Erna Solberg to lead a thematic session on conservation of forests. She also posts on session on climate financing. And at the end of the summit is Solberg among a small number of selected government and ministers who are invited to dinner with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in which way forward towards Paris are subject.
EU to start the debate on what is needed to achieve the goal of limiting global warming to two degrees. This discussion will summarize Erna Solberg.
Norway promoter
Norway are invited to climate dinner together with Bolivia, who heads the G77 group, Brazil, Canada, China, Indonesia, EU, Italy, Japan, UK, South Africa, Russia and USA.
– invitation from Ban Ki-moon I interpret as a confirmation of Norway’s important role in climate work and our important role in general of the UN’s work. We are ambitious and has been a driving force in climate policy.
Leading for rain forest
As regards the involvement of the rainforest, we have been a leader. And we should be a driving force in international efforts to come to bring down greenhouse gas emissions, says Prime Minister Erna Solberg told Dagbladet.
She already has a catalytic role in efforts to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals and poverty reduction, which is one of the topics for UN General Assembly this week.
– It might have meant something that I have had several meetings with Ban Ki-moon about this work, says Solberg. This summer she was on an Africa tour as part of efforts to front MDGs.
More to the climate fund
Now get Solberg also an international role in the fight for climate goals. She should first and foremost ensure that more countries follow up work on forest conservation and the preservation of forest payable with development.
– Developing countries feel that conservation of forests means a limitation in their development. There is a reason why we have set aside 200 million to the Green Climate Fund. The fund plays an important role in the financing of climate measures in developing countries. The goal is to reduce global emissions from forest in 2030 by between 4.5 and 8.8 Gt, says Solberg.
Legislation climate budget
– If Norway to have an international driving role in the climate issue commits it at home.
Yes, and the government is working to strengthen climate compromise. The most important are measures which are effective. We will implement measures in the state budget on 8 October. The key is to put in place mechanisms that provide international results, says Solberg.
She believes an ambitious international climate agreement must have predictable performance-based arrangements for climate finance. It should signal that innovation and investment that will reduce emissions and smarter resource use will pay off.
It is best served by putting price on emissions, and stimulate the development of new technologies. New technology can mean that developing countries can skip the fossil phase and go straight to renewable energy, like solar.
– price on carbon works. They motivate individuals, businesses, governments and countries to adapt to a low-emission. Therefore, Norway supports the World Bank’s call for a price on carbon, which will be launched at the climate summit. We must put a price on emissions rather than to subsidize pollution, says Solberg.
