To cured my “Digital ADHD.”
Friday, 20. February 2015 – 2:07 p.m.
Read the first part: “I used this in two weeks – it was not like I imagined. “
The frenzied information database we have access to will always grow, and I have always unconsciously tried to keep me updated best ability. I realized that it is not necessary to the same extent I thought before.
Please present
I think everyone agrees that experiences in real life is more important than what happens on the phone. That calls, events and relationships are important. Nevertheless, most of us unnecessary time consuming unnecessary phone content. Contents forgotten a few seconds afterwards.
And what does it with us? I’m no sociologist or scientist, but I dare assert that it makes many of us stressed.
“Digital ADHD” is a term frequently than before popping up in Norwegian media. We shall always multitask, jumping from one to the other before the first is finished.
We are more keen to get to point B, than to enjoy point A while we are there. It is probably the most important lessons I learned from my little stupid experiment. Maybe it sounds like blurb taken from a book full of so-called wisdom, but for me this was the reality.
I f o lte less turmoil of to v æ re offline.
How I took back control
So perhaps many are wondering: Will I replace smartphone with a Feature phone permanently? No, absolutely not.
Although this may seem contradictory, I see a high value in smartphones. Gadgets we have are wonderful resources. I just think that most of us have not learned to use them properly. Or put another way; we have not learned not to use them properly.
I have now gone back to my smartphone. But there point I emphasize is that I will not use it as before.
I have now switched to a cheaper subscription that does not offer as many included GB package. The main problem with smart phones as I see it, namely that access to information – especially now that most people have mobile data enabled a large part of the time – is so enormous that it should be limited.
Shift to cheaper subscriptions
Most of us are not so clever to restrict it on its own, therefore a technological limitation in terms of low consumption-subscription be a nice solution. I now have mobile data off unless there is something very special to do, be it checking maps, pay parking with mobile app or send a picture to someone when I do not have WiFi available.
I have turned off all notifications.
When someone sends me do not I know it before I even actively seek it. I take control of my own time and do not let people decide when to answer. This I informed friends and family in advance.
And remember: Sometimes it may be appropriate to think a little about before you answer too. Although Facebok informs the sender when a message is seen, it does not mean that you must answer it right away.
With mobile data off and alerts denied the balance between use and unnecessary use much clearer and easier to define.
It’s worth the experiment
I am of course no morality guardian or expert who says what others do. I’m just a former technology journalist who has learned a lot about myself and my own use of technology.
My message is simple: Do you recognize any of what I write, or is slightly interested in getting a revelation, so feel free to try something similar.
You do not necessarily have to do something so “extremely” like buying a Feature phone, but you can for example turn off cellular data in one or two weeks. Obviously I can not guarantee what you will experience, but I dare assert that chances are high that you will not regret having tried.
You can of course argue that it is unnecessary to write a long article about a topic that seems so “stupid”, “obvious” and “obviously individually.” It is difficult to be totally disagree that assertion, it may seem a bit hopeless that own mobile use should be prepared as so important.
But today it is easy to accuse others to use their mobile phones for much. I think most of us should start by looking at your own mobile use and evaluate it after himself having experienced the contrast.
To truly realize how how immensely fast the technological world has evolved in recent years, perhaps change something you forever.
