Helgesen: – We must pave the way for climate-smart choices – ABC News

– Many fear that the green shift will mean sacrifices and harder everyday. I think rather on opportunities in new technologies, he said.

Helgesen believes new technology development is a prerequisite for the Norwegians to retain our high welfare.

– We need to get people to understand the risk if we do not restructure us in time, he says, and emphasizes that an economy with more legs to stand on ensuring both jobs and competitiveness.

Green tax shift

He stressed that the use of economic instruments through green tax shift is important for achieving emissions targets, and points out that the four cooperating parties are agreed a substantial green tax shift.

The fresh climate minister says it’s too early to say what the concrete will entail for the individual sectors, including oil and gas. But he emphasizes that the government should stimulate business, research, innovation and education.

Market forces

– It is important mitigation, says Helgesen which does not exactly hide their faith in market forces.

Vidar Helgesen (H) does not agree that it is major tensions within the present government and that he as climate minister gets a hard job of selling the message of green changing to other ministries. – I mean other governments have had greater tensions, he says. – We see that markets and investors are moving money into renewable energy research and innovation goes in green direction, stressing Helgesen , who has just taken over the chair after Tine Sundtoft (H). Until Parisian success did Sundtoft much pepper from Norwegian environmental organizations for not doing enough at home.

In his former post as minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and European minister did not score Helgesen high on newspapers’ dice. Dagbladet gave him a deuce earlier this fall, partly as a result of low visibility in the debates.

When asked how important it is to be a visible Climate and Environment, he replied:

– Visibility is important in helping to get the job done. And this job is going to entail more visibility, I want to contribute to an informed debate.

Clearly message

Helgesen believes that climate agreement from Paris has given a clear message to governments, businesses and people. He believes that the world’s governments will follow up Paris agreement, not least because many countries are now experiencing climate change as very real.

– Pollution has also become a political liability in many places, he said.

Still oil

What about the Norwegian oil industry, the continued production and new licensing round? Many believe that all brakes need for Norway to be able to fulfill our obligations.

– There is no question of putting a stop to the Norwegian oil and gas industry with the first. Until we have 100 percent renewable energy in the world, fossil fuels play a role, and the fossil is gas the cleanest. We should not feel guilty that we have large gas reserves to offer, says Helgesen.

On the question of how we will fulfill our commitments, he says that Norway now to start discussions with the EU on it, but without To be more specific than that we should adapt ourselves Paris Agreement.

And on a scale of one to ten-where climate conscious is Helgesen in everyday life?

– Aided by my wife, I will say 8, he replied, if I can draw from all flights were officially.

He has good conscience when it comes to both recycling and consumption of red meat. The EV is ordered and diselbilen on the way out.

– The el-booking cars came thus before I was asked about this ministerial post, he insists.
