Telecoms companies are not what they once were.
To make a charge in the unit price of call minutes and text messaging has become increasingly difficult. Now also data traffic be becoming what in English is called a “commodity” – a base item that is difficult to achieve high margins on selling.
– In the short term it will not necessarily be a problem, but it is a long term challenge for all telcos how to charge for data traffic, says analyst Henriette Trondsen (29) as follows Telenor brokerage Arctic Securities.
Nightmare scenario
the nightmare for telecom companies is what is called “dumb pipe” scenario: A future where they are reduced to being the tube that gives us access to everything we want on the internet, but without even take part in the flow of money.
to avoid it, see Telenor to Norwegian entrepreneurial companies. Telecom companies will not only give you access to the internet, they will also give you what you find on the internet.
Thursday flew Telenor employees from all its 13 markets Bangkok, to pitching their entrepreneurial ideas in front of a jury. It chose 30 teams that will focus on internally.
Telenor will allow the employees to be entrepreneurs with full pay for three months.
– We have received over 500 ideas for digital services from small, employee-driven entrepreneurial teams throughout the world. Those who win are taken out of their normal job for three months and get the resources and time required to develop the business plan and prototypes. The aim is that the prototypes will be services that can be launched locally in our markets, or in the global mass market for digital services, writes CEO Sigve Brekke (56) by email.
Provides money to startup businesses
Telenor also look outside its own ranks.
Wednesday it was announced that six startups will get 1.3 million each and a three-month intensive accelerator program organized by Telenor and Startuplab fall.
– We realize that many of tomorrow’s winning digital services will be developed by us, says Gisle Pedersen, head of Telenor Norway’s innovation department for mobile.
Telenor has carried accelerator programs in Asia before, but cooperated with Startuplab will be the first in Norway.
will offer you what you can find on the internet, not just web
What do Telenor for? Any Internet-based service that can prevent them from becoming a “dumb pipe,” says Pedersen.
– internet services look first for mobile phones. It’s mobile services. And we have to offer them, he said.
A business accelerator is a program to speed the development of a new business.
– Firms have access to Telenor’s network. They also receive a marketing mentor, technical mentoring, sales mentor and a main mentor, who will be there with the whip and get them to run faster, explains partner Rolf Assev (53) in Startuplab.
He compares it to be at the gym.
– Now I’ve never been to the gym. But people say that you deliver a lot more if you have a PT. They should have a PT (Personal Trainer journ.anm.) Which ensures that the peak performance of over three months, says Assev.
more
Telenor operates already cloud storage in competition with players like Dropbox with My Sky. In some countries, they offer streaming music, through Telenor Music, which is a collaboration with Tidal / Wimp.
– Payment Solutions and eHealth applications are other examples. Can we find common things we can provide our customers with startup companies, so we find ways to cooperate, says Pedersen.
One of America’s two largest phone companies, Verizon, bought last year media company AOL, including own huffing Post, for $ 4.4 billion.
must be an internet company
so far exceeds the revenue telecom companies from data traffic, but far from proportional to the growth in consumption.
With the new 5G technology projected data rate for mobiles our to multiply. When the question is about the “wireless Web access becomes even more of a staple,” said analyst Chetan Sharma of The Economist in February.
We’ve already passed the point where those who give us access to the services (mobile operators ours) have an overall lower turnover than the services they give us access to (Facebook, fitness app, Netflix, online newspapers etc.), estimates Sharma.
Sigve Brekke imprint
– We are all striving to become a part of the value chain on the Internet, and is afraid of being a ” dumb pipe, “said Sigve Brekke to Digital News Asia in February 2014, just over a year before he became chief of the entire Telenor system.
Innovation department of Telenor Norway was established as recently as February. Just before Christmas they created a separate product and innovation department at group level.
– All this is relatively new, yes. It all started when we had a strategy process last autumn, says Gunnar Sellæg (42), who heads the new innovation department at group level.
– How much of this comes from Sigve Brekke?
– Sigve is clearly an important part of it in relation to set direction for Telenor, says Sellæg.
