- Do I still do a good job – Fredrikstad Blad

Physician Specialist in diseases of the elderly, Bjarne Damslora, working two days a week at Onsøy mountains in Fredrikstad.

  – Do not you feel too old to have such a big responsibility?

 - It is not possible to compare an entire vintage. Most 75 year olds today are both physically and mentally astute, say geriatricians.

  – So you are no longer afraid of making mistakes now?

 - No, I’m not. In a way, I feel safer now that I have such extensive experience. I feel I still do a good job. And the skills I have acquired in my field is higher than that of a young doctor. There will also be a 75-year-old harder to keep up with all the new technology.

 No GPs over 70

Today, the state requires that health professionals over 75 must apply regularly for the right to practice. But the regulations are now probably easier for Damslora, and with Fredrikstad chief officer’s blessing.

In the proposed submission, to be up in Wednesday’s Health and Welfare Committee, proposes namely the alderman that the municipality supports the Government’s proposal to increase the age limit to maintain certification as a healthcare professional with five years from the current limit of 75 years to 80 years.

 A proposal Damslora endorses.

 - I must say Fredrikstad has been kind to me. I have received an exemption from 70 years of age for one year. Until the age of 75, it is the employer who decides.

  – How long should you hold on?

 - If your health holds, I will first take two years, and I will take an assessment each year after that.

Fredrikstad municipality has 66 GPs, seven of which are over 60 years old. None of the doctors are over 70 years old. So the elder doctor they are Damslora, temporarily employed as a nursing home physician.

By Østfold Hospital are the three oldest doctors passed 70 years – none of them are over 75 All work part time, about 30 percent.

 - The oldest doctors often engage themselves, says Damslora.

 Challenges

In the case documents to Wednesday’s meeting Councillor writes:

 - Fredrikstad municipality will in the future increase of workload in the health care field, in connection with the transfer of responsibilities to the local authorities as well as an aging population. A higher rating will provide the municipality with better access to health professionals including nursing homes and doctors’ practices. This will probably be most appropriate for smaller jobs and by short-term absence.

The submission deadline is 1 October. If Parliament is considered the proposal during the next spring, the changes take effect from 1 July 2015.
