train delays cost the community millions of dollars each year, causing much resentment among passengers. This problem has SINTEF wanted to get to the bottom, along with players in Norwegian railway.

Showing variation

– We previously had a project called “Pusam.” There, we developed a computer program that collects and compares tidmålinger by train. Rail was so pleased with the program, they opened up for the new project “Precise”, where we continued to work with the computer program.

program, for example, show that most trains are on track in some stretches, while there may be considerable variation in how late the train is at a different distance.

– The core of the program is that it shows the variation in delays. And the variety is something you should not have a railway network that relies on all trains arrive on time, explains researcher at SINTEF, Andreas Amdahl Seim.

– Amazing that it goes well

When asked how Seim believes that the railway could be better, he replied:

– It is amazing that we are able to operate trains in Norway as well as we do. The railroad is our very large and are subject to dependencies. It is very much to be voting at the same time, he said.

– Today increases the utilization of the railroads. Man running more trains without the infrastructure being developed at the same pace. The challenge then is it expected that punctuality should be maintained, says Seim.
