Intel wants in on mobiles and tablets - Tech Magazine

There is no doubt that Intel is the king of silicon.

But we look at phones and tablets, is the English ARM dominate. Unlike Intel processors they do not produce themselves. They create designs that they sell to others as Qualcomm, Samsung, Apple and Nvidia.

together sold about four times as many ARM processors like Intel. From the very beginning, the company focused on low power consumption and it has given a tremendous count as the world has become more environmentally conscious and that computers increasingly take the form of mobiles and tablets with limited battery capacity.

Soon Intel will also get competitive on the server side. Hundreds of millions of servers, which we like to refer to as the cloud, account for an increasing share of power to IT.

current drain

Intel’s big problem has been power consumption. They come from a world where performance has been the alpha and omega for almost 40 years to the day where energy consumption is at least as increasingly important in many applications.

over five years ago vowed processor giant put into collision to reduce power consumption so that laptops could be used for several hours and that mobiles and later tablets with Intel processors would get acceptable battery life.

still uses 95 percent of mobile phones and tablets today ARM chips. Not much Intel success there in the yard.

To change

Now it looks like Intel’s long struggle against electron thirst to succeed. They have launched Medfield variant of the Atom processor which do well in tests against ARM in mobile phones. It is time for a new processor architecture to really hone in and it will really revolutionize the power consumption of Intel’s side.

Silver Mont, as it is called, is shrunk down with Intel’s 22 nanometer technology and in terms of today’s most power-efficient Atom processor and, where Intel is telling the truth, either provide three times more than the present generation without increasing power consumption .

Alternatively, it can manage with one fifth of the power of keeping the performance constant.

Tick tock

Intel has a so-called Tick-Tock model where the annentvert year makes a “tick”, which means that the shrinking silicon structures.

It happened last year when they went down to 22 nm. Next year is the time for 14 nm. In the years between the “tock” that changes the micro-architecture. Silver Mont is thus a tock where the company adopts many new ideas and technology to get it to go faster and with lower power consumption

That means Intel can turn back across the battlefield ranging from mobiles, via tablets, PCs and server with other applications that require computing power.

processors that use the new architecture will reach the market later this year.

Banks competition: When comparing Intel Dual Core Silver Mont against dual-core processors, which is probably ARM without describing it, the performance is about the double, while power consumption is reduced to less than one-fourth. Photo: Intel
