Sony has had great success with waterproof phones. Now they move on, that is deeper, the new Sony Xperia ZR.

While the flagship Sony Xperia Z, which climbs ever higher on Telenor and Netcom charts, can withstand one meter deep, is the slightly smaller newcomer waterproof to 1.5 meters.

IP classification

Sony has tested it at this depth for 30 minutes and it usually means good margins in both depth and time.

The slightly smaller newcomer has been classified IP55/IP58, which is part sharper than big brother.

Experience shows that summer, with boating and swimming, clean death battlefield for mobile phones. The Sony Xperia ZR survival rate should go drastically in the weather. Few harbors deeper than this stand.

Sony shows even how to film underwater pictures with your phone, and they have fitted it with a dedicated button for taking photos and video in the wet element. The camera of 13 mega pixels is the same as in Z.

Although ZR withstand more pressure than Z, then this is a smaller phone. The screen is 1280 x 720 pixels, while the Z has a 1920 x 1080.

I must say that it is hardly possible to spot such small pixels. The phone has a quad-core processor at 1.5 GHz, well supported by 2 GB RAM. Performance should not be a problem.

Storage memory is paltry 8 GB, but it has slot for microSD cards that can fill the memory up to 64 GB extra.

4G and more

phone supports all the new 4G bands and is equipped with NFC. Unlike Samsung, who have chosen to cut the FM radio in its new Galaxy S4, so Sony has retained it.

Sony Xperia ZR come to market this summer. Hopefully before people start falling in the water.

price is not clear, but we guess a list price of around 4000, but hardly so expensive in online shops.

option may be Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2, which is IP67 rated.

That means it manages the same as Xperia Z, namely one meter deep. It is indeed both heavier and with much lower specifications, but then it also costs just a little over two thousand.
