- Haswell will provide 50 percent better battery life - Technology Magazine

Processor giant Intel has not the habit to make big promises about their new products ahead of the launch, but the performance will be improved and power consumption is lower.

Better Battery

Now Intel architecture Chief Rani Borkar all speak out and said that Haswell chips will give laptops to 50 percent better battery life than their corresponding Ivy Bridge chips.

And it shall come to pass without any performance loss, says Borkar according to Computerworld.

reduction in consumption will occur as a result of a dedicated power management unit in the chip that constantly supplied and adjusts power consumption in all parts of the chip as needed.

The preliminary number one in our battery tests are HP’s business ultrabook Folio 9470M, which was the result of the test program Power Mark of seven hours and 27 minutes. It could mean that a similar machine with Haswell chip approaching 12 hours of battery life.

The new Core chips have a maximum power consumption (TDP, actually a term for the cooling load) as low as 7 watts, and it means that they will be suitable in tablets.

Borkar says that Haswell processor will give the same battery life as a non-Intel chip, but better performance than has been common in tablet meant for content consumption.

doubled graphics performance

Intel has talked most about Haswell graphics performance. The integrated graphics chip will in fact give a doubling in performance on laptops, and up to triple performance on desktops.

It should of course be said that the graphics performance of Intel’s Core chips so far has not been much, but with a doubling in performance, they will be able to compete with a good number of dedicated chips.

Intel has announced that it will launch Haswell chips at the Computex trade show in Taiwan 4 June.
