Debian 7 addresses the widespread problem - digi.no

Debian project came yesterday with the seventh major release of the Debian project. This distribution is no longer among the most widely used, but it forms the basis for popular releases like Ubuntu and Mint. Also Norwegian edu is based on Debian, and a test version of Debian Based on Debian 7 ‘Wheezy’ was made available last week already.

There are several important news in Debian 7 Among these Multiarch, which makes it possible to install software packages for a number of different hardware architectures on the same system. In particular, one scenario will be useful, namely when one needs to have both 32 – and 64-bit versions of the same library available on your machine.

Debian project follows a rather strict regime when it the proprietary software. Such is not included with the distribution, but can be downloaded from third parties by users who want it. Particularly in connection with the playback of media content, this has been needed for many, but now Debian include codec support based on free software including MP3, H.264 and MPEG-4 ASP.

Debian also quite conservative when it comes to what versions of the software included. For example, it is only now that the 3.x version of the Linux kernel is used, and then it more than a year old 3.2 release. Version 3.9 came about a week ago.

Yet 20,160 software packages have been updated with this release. The distribution includes more than 12 800 new packages, while more than 4100 have been deleted. A total distribution now consists of about 37 500 packets.

New is also the amd64 version of Debian 7 now has support for installation and boot using UEFI, which is in the process of replacing BIOS in newer PCs. But currently there is no support for Secure Boot feature of UEFI.
