phone lines – one until recently could find a good deal residues in Lomsdal-Visten National Park in Helgeland – was built in the 1950s. In the 1970s it was no longer used for the line, and part of it was cleared away.
However, since much of the line runs through the tough wilderness, many beating chopped down and left to rot. The bars were however full of creosote and substances dangerous for the environment and health, and one so therefore eventually a need to remove what was left.
Moreover, there was again a good number string, or wire, from the time the line was operational. This has been a major concern for animals in the area, says National manages Torhild Lamo.
– I’ve even gone dog that got stuck in the string, and the locals have seen moose with string around your head or antlers. This may cause damage resulting in death. This is a national park, and it was of course very important to get cleaned up.
Impressed
Lamo sat therefore down and wrote a letter to Telenor, where she demanded that they took action and cleaned up after old environmental sins. She was prepared for battle, but Telenor proved to be difficult to ask.
– I was very impressed that they took responsibility and quickly launched efforts to remove junk, says Lamo.
Information Manager Tormod Sandstø Telenor says that it is generally important for the company to partly clean up after old technology that is no longer in use.
– We mapping tens of thousands of posts every year, making it reviews whether there is anyone who should be replaced, upgraded or removed.
Demanding
Much of the effort is the Ole Mathias Arntsen BN contractor that has stood for.
He is one of those who have worked out in the national park last summer and this year, and tells of a demanding work to remove the nearly 700 kreosotbefengte beating lying overgrown again along streams and swamps.
– Commonly used machines, but here we had to use more simple implements since this is in a national park. So we had to dig well below the bars and try us with chainsaws best ability. It is not easy with a lot of sand and rocks around.
The bars had so towed to an open area where a helicopter later able to land and collect the wood out.
– last year we were two. This year we have four at first, but otherwise just three workers. It has been a challenging work, but the result was very good, he says.
