Norwegian underwater craft inserted into AirAsia search – Aftenposten

Singapore makes clear two-called AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) category Remus 100 in the search for the missing AirAsia plane.

The unmanned craft manufactured by Hydroid in USA – a subsidiary of Kongsberg Gruppen. It writes Laagendalsposten.

An international team of experts is now arrived the area south of Borneo, where the wrecked plane from AirAsia expected to lie. They bring advanced equipment to search up accident aircraft recorder and cockpit voice marvel water.

A Indonesian navy ship found Friday afternoon the crashed AirAsia aircraft tail of 29 meters, NTB.

– We managed to track down the tail of the aircraft using a side scan sonar, said the ship’s captain Yayan Sofyan to Metro TV.

as well as putting words Norwegian equipment into the continuing search efforts.

Suitable for shallow search

– I can confirm that Singapore’s navy has several craft category Remus 100. It is these that are now inserted into operation . This is craft that is portable and easy mobilized operations that occur in shallow depths operation takes place, communication manager at Kongsberg Gruppen, John N. Dobson.

The plane was heading from Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board when it disappeared 42 minutes after departure Sunday morning.

The wreck is believed to be around 30 meters depth, and intense exploration now takes place under water.

– Remus-craft used relatively often to find objects at this depth, says John Dobson.

Kongsberg Gruppen has developed several such robots, and is forefront of technological developments in this area.

It is not the first their submersibles inserted into search.

Have assisted in more casualty

The robots played a crucial role when Air France plane was found at the bottom of the Atlantic in 2011 – two years after the crash happened.

The model 6000 Remus found the time wreck and both the black boxes on the seabed 2011.

Similar vessels from of Kongsberg Gruppen also assisted last year in the search for the wrecked MH370 aircraft from Malaysian Airlines. The search took place in the Indian Ocean, but the plane is still not found.

As the model name suggests, this type of maneuver down to 6000 meters depth.

Used military and research

Underwater Robots have a wide application.

In marine research used AUVs to including oceanography, climate research, environmental monitoring, geophysics and archeology.

In addition, the offshore industry advantage of AUVs to detail seabed mapping and inspection of pipelines.

They also used minesøk. Besides Singapore, has among others the US Navy AUV’er category Remus 100 of its own.

According to Dobson, move the vehicle itself consistently within a defined range, and uses various sensors to survey conditions under water.

– As underwater conditions are often dark or unclear, are sensors that sonar important to find objects, says communications manager.

– In this case it is Singapore’s navy which utilizes their craft. These are primarily in the Navy possession to search for mines, but is also very good to find other objects.
