This said headmaster at Aalesund University College at a seminar at NTNU Wednesday morning where managements from NTNU, Sør-Trøndelag University College, Gjøvik, Ålesund and Narvik were gathered for a seminar to discuss possible merger between these institutional holders.
Two models
– We have recorded the Ministry two unprioritised models. One is NTNU its multi-campus model (with the aforementioned colleges journ. Note.) While the other is the regional option with sammeslåtte colleges in Møre og Romsdal and Sogn og Fjordane. We have been asked by Ministry of Education to prioritize between the two options. We will do this on 19 January, announced headmaster.
But in the next now she points ie at NTNU as the best option. – It is also the answer we get when we hear with industry. Among other things, the maritime sector’s opportunities through a merger with NTNU, said Synnes.
Shared mission
She reminded that NTNU and Aalesund University College a common mission.
– We will conduct education and research, dissemination and public relations. In relation to the past we have large degrees of freedom and we are perhaps a college which has excellent ourselves that we have gone very into working closely with labor and business. There we have integrated both in education and research, said the headmaster.
She pointed out that the college is located in a region with two major clusters: the maritime sector and the biomarine clusters.
Close contact
– Maybe especially the maritime sector has gone from road to rely on experience-based knowledge to rely on more expertise. They come to us and ask us to be involved in research and expand their competitiveness. Furthermore, we see that close cooperation with industry gives relevance to our studies. We have close contact that makes sure we get feedback immediately on our studies are relevant or not. It is a dialogue that we set very high. We also see that students are motivated by close contact oath future employers, she said.
Synnes argue that a multi-campus institution with NTNU can deliver on all priority areas of the Government’s long-term plan for research and higher education.
Heavyweight technology
– First and foremost, we will be a national heavyweight in technology. Ocean space covering both marine and maritime field. Between college in Ålesund and NTNU we have a common CRI (Centre for Research-based Innovation) on marine operations, but we also have a common SFI with environmental focus in energy efficiency in the maritime sector with MARINTEK where they are the center conductor. And a common SFI with the University of Agder, pointed Synnes.
Starting in SFI
She noted that at a possible merger between Aalesund University College and NTNU an SFI be first touch point, the institutions grabs and work out from. – Then we have the funds to start sewing us together, she said and pointed out that Aalesund University College also is a partner in the Global Centre of Expertise Maritime which will contribute to an innovative and adaptable businesses.
– We will be the preferred partner in the maritime industry and other technological companies and we will conduct research ranging from basic to the applied. Together with NTNU we get to this, said Synnes and continued:
– With biomarine cluster Møre partner and good marine environment at several institutions involved in multi-campus model, so together we can give it marine industry a boost. We can help to exploit marine resources in new ways, for everything from aquaculture to new marine ingredients or by utilizing new technology.
Renewal of public sector
She also believes that they can play a national role in health and be best in health simulation in education and research and to contribute to the renewal of the public sector as the government wants.
Furthermore, the economic environments overall be very robust with the ability to develop world-leading environment in several fields.
Live campus
– For us to be able to deliver, we need ambulatory, vibrant campus that are in growth and development. A site management is important for the professional running of campus, but it is also important for NTNU to affect the quality and ensure that it will not be complete anarchy out on the decentralized campuses, pointed Synnes.
Think
– The question is who professionals respond to: Resident management, or dean and head of department at NTNU? And how do we get good cooperation across decentralized campuses? It’s a fact that we colleges have professional educations as NTNU does not have. As we can strengthen by collaborating across between us. Perhaps the present day can give us some answers on that. But we must rethink completely when it comes to building the organization in the best possible way, but I think that it will be worth it in the long run, said Marianne Synnes.
