First impressions PlayStation 4 - Gamer.no

Sony has gone for a full-scale design.

Here are our first impressions after trying Sony’s elegant living room console since Friday.

Sony now releasing its first console living in seven years, the company fronts a totally different position than before. While the PlayStation 3 was hyped as a Supercomputer with a focus on entertainment – a machine Ken Kuturagi would not call a game machine – is modest more sober this time.

PlayStation 4 is all about games.

After a long weekend with the machine in house, this mantra is confirmed. Everything is focused around gaming experience, from the operating system to the paucity of media features that are pushed into the box. Sony has really staked everything on one card, and it benefits us as primarily looking to play.

Elegant Box

The first thing one notices when one rips the console out of the box, the stylish design Sony has gone. The little black dress is actually surprisingly thin, and takes significantly less space than the big brother PlayStation 3 did when it was first released. At the sloping rear and the front is a nice touch that sets it apart from the rest of the staid rectangular boxes that are placed in the TV bench. The finishing touch is the light that runs along the median strip when refueling machine.

to be little console does not produce too much noise. A slight fan noise blaring always, but it is only in gaming the fan noise becomes noticeable. The perceived not annoying, and unless you prefer to play with low sound you will not struggle to drown fan buzzing.

Chopped more troublesome is Blu-ray driven with the same volume as the other disk units. It is noticeable, but compared with the noise level we are used to in the early editions of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Sony’s latest set well. I should mention that we have only been able to test this with Blu-ray playback, since we have not obtained any disk-based games yet.

rest of the package contents are predictable – here you will find an HDMI cable, power cable, charging cable to the controller, earphone with microphone, manuals in any language, and of course a Dual Shock 4

Kaffe controls

For the first time since Sony introduced the Dual Shock Controller for PlayStation in 1997, the company has changed significantly in design. “Start” – and “select” buttons are planed off and replaced with “share” – and “options” buttons located near the top of the middle section. This seems a bit non-intuitive and difficult to reach, but I’m open to that this may be a short adjustment period.

midst of shebang we find a printable touch surface that resembles a touchpad of a laptop – a contribution to the control layout currently not enhance the experience considerably. We’ve even just tried the touchpad in Killzone: Shadow Fall at a trade show earlier this year where it replaces a menu, and though it seems simple, it makes no marvels of the interface. That it is not used for menu navigation of the operating system seems a little strange.

For those with more grip than us småfingrede it might be nice to hear that analog sticks have been separated further apart. The rubber sticks also feels much better than Sony’s previous attempts – largely because of indentation that allows the thumb does not slip out of the middle of gaming fun. Should I poke a little more on the superficial, I can mention that the arrow buttons and context provides more resistance compared with the Dual Shock 3

The best innovation is clearly shoulder buttons. While the front two have become more curved, they rearmost received an indentation which enables the finger no longer sliding off button press. This was the Dual Shock Handle biggest problem, and it is high time that this change takes effect.

bottom of the lever we find a mini-jack input that works with enpluggs headset. I tried it with the supplied headset, which is far from pleasant to use. Fortunately are free to switch to other headphones with mini jack, which makes the experience better.

back of the controller there is also a light that shows colors based on the context in games. Currently, this seems very redundant, and it is not possible to turn off the light. A small speaker that churns out small sounds are also located on the controller, but it varies from game to game how it is used.

DualShock 4 impresses with its improvements, and after a few days of playing it sits pretty much like a shot. The battery seems to last for 7-9 hours before it is discharged, which is a bit short. Fortunately it does not take long to charge it up again. The controller is much more comfortable than their ancestors, and are a big part of what makes the experience of PlayStation 4 differs from PlayStation 3

others as signaling a shift between generations is functioning operating system. Compared with the PlayStation 3′s “Cross Media Bar ‘pulls the PlayStation 4′s menus quick, albeit a bit more complex.

The interface is great. The interface is great. (Photo: Gamer.no, Audun Rodem)

In practice there are two menu lines. The top menu is filled with icons that are associated with the console’s features, such as the PS Store, a notification center, side profile and settings. In this we find a user menu that is filled with games, services and everything related to the game experience. This dichotomy is not hard to navigate, but I’m scratching my head a bit about why it is divided into just these two menus.

Silk Smooth it anyway. When you press the PS button during playback immediately comes out of the operating system, which often felt heavily in the previous console generation. From the menus so you can do just about anything you want without closing the game, apart from starting a new game.

A complaint is Trophy menu. Although it is significantly faster and better than the PlayStation 3 version still takes longer to check bragging list at the PlayStation 4 than it does on Xbox 360 It should be noted that this system is most likely also get some lag with us as a result of the European system is not stacked on their feet yet. By the way, Sony has added a new subsystem ii Trophy gleaning – now you know what percentage of players who have achieved the same thing as you, and how rare achievement is.

On the web and streaming

During the test period I also piled me into the U.S. PS Store version, which seems to have given the same design here in Norway. Sony has honed interface as we know from the PlayStation 3′s version of the store, with larger icons and fewer menu choices. It’s not the big change, but everything seems easier and less burdensome run.

Speaking just link the desired machine that I should download the update 1.50 with things once I started it for the first time. Although the patch was taken from America, this was a quick process and it took about 90 seconds to download it with my 100 Mbits line. The installation was also painless and over in about two minutes.

One of the things that the update was locked up Remote Play feature, where the PlayStation 4 is connected with the handheld console PS Vita. We tried out the feature with games Knack and Resogun, and can report that it seemed to work well.

function makes it possible to stream PlayStation 4 games for the handheld console over a wireless local area network, and thus play on there if the TV is busy with other tasks. When I used the PS Vita as a controller in this way, it worked without lag, and what you do with the controls of the machine is made immediately on the TV screen.

image is streamed to the Vita screen occurs, however, lag of approximately 25 milliseconds, and the video signal is lowered in quality and number of image updates per second lock to 30 Most noticeable was the Resogun, running in 1080p and 60 image updates per second on the screen, but then halved the handheld console.

PlayStation 4 also offers the ability to stream games through web services Twitch.tv and Ustream. As a former Twitch user, simply log in with their account, press the “share” button and start the quiz. A border can be added around the image makes it easy to keep track of what is happening in the chat window while playing, even though it may go a little fast if enough people commenting at the same time. In my 10 Mbits line this worked smoothly at the highest quality, as well enough suffering a bit of compression.

No media box

As media does not PlayStation 4 to be particularly attractive. Except to offer access to services like Netflix stream and playback via Sony’s Music and Video Unlimited services, there are no opportunities to play your own files. The exception is the MP3 or CD is not currently playable, but Sony promises that will be implemented with time. As far as I can see there is no option to stream files over the network from another machine.

These are properties that can be added in updates, but that Sony chose to leave it at launch means that there is some risk to bet on the PlayStation 4 as a media box. This is a machine for those who play – the rest will settle for other solutions.

By games we’ve got time to test Knack and Resogun depth. Although I’ll be back with reviews of both, I can mention that they work well with the system, but can mention that Remote Play function via PS Vita in one case something strange cut the voice from the Knack.

Both games were downloaded from the U.S. online store, which makes it a little tricky to measure some features related to Download. For example, we started to play Knack long before the 36 gigabytene was finished downloading – game shows information about downloading in the main menu, and how many chapters are available.

The download of the Knack in our case was tremendously slow for several reasons. Firstly, the game was loaded from American servers – the others struggled with the Sony PlayStation Network this weekend. It is difficult to give a proper impression of your experience until Sony turns on the servers on this side of the Earth.

Conclusion

PlayStation 4 will be released in Norway 29 November is by all accounts a functional console ports under the TV. During my barely three days of machine I have had little to fault the newcomer, although it has been a part struggle to navigate an American network solution that is not meant for me. I can not blame Sony for.

important is it that everything flows well, which seems to be in place already.

The most positive innovations is undoubtedly the new controller and flow function. The former makes a kvantebyks from its predecessor and improves virtually all, the latter has the potential to build on the foundation laid by PC audiences who have done this a couple of years already.

in media handling that PlayStation 4 currently fall short. Blu-ray and DVD playback is all well and good, but that external hard drives can not be used for media storage and playback of files makes me scratch my head. Possibly, Sony had haste and focused on the important things first, and perhaps this comes later.

all, is a gaming experience on games. Since I have only tried Resogun Knack and so far it is difficult to comment on the range at launch. Leading up to the launch we will come with a profusion of reviews, making it easier to see the games offer is something to brag about.

Currently, PlayStation 4:01 functional machine that is tailor-made for gaming, and not much more. Maybe it’s enough.
