The misty fire alarm – NRK

If you’re running against a tunnel and see smoke, it is not certain it’s dangerous. Whether there has been an early spring or autumn, temperatures can cause problems for motorists.

– Have the windscreen wipers and drive carefully. One can also open the window and let in some air, says tunnel manager Odd Einar Lillebø, the Public Roads Administration regional center.

There have been cases where police and fire departments have received notification of a fire in a tunnel, but that later proved to be only moisture. Sometimes closing the tunnels because of mist.

Can not blow out mist

The water vapor is the fact that it is warmer in the tunnel than outside. When it comes traits, cool air and condense.

– it is said that the ventilation in the tunnel can help, but we have gone more and more away from the solution. It’s not easy to get out the dew, tells Lillebø.

The fog formed by water vapor, can be so dense that it becomes difficult driving conditions. By Innfjord Tunnel stands including a permanent sign with dew warning. The sign will be opened by NPRA when dew is at its worst.

Karl Inge Vestre Hauge is construction manager for Eiksundtunnelen. Last week stopped motorists outside the tunnel, because they observed much smoke.

– We have no methods to prevent this from happening. We just have to warn motorists when this phenomenon occurs, says Hauge.

the limits in the tunnel air is one of the things to be researched.

– In some tunnels we have something called RGB signs, which are signs you can write a text. In connection with dew, so we are now working to identify the limits in air, for when this sign to alert motorists. How much moisture it takes, what temperatures that underlies and what type of traffic it is, tells Lillebø.

If you encounter such a phenomenon, the NPRA that you report it.

– if you get scared, so try first to determine if there is steam or fire before running into. Run too careful about visibility can be poor. Please let us know so that we can handle it, says Lillebø.
