Man eaten by their dogs in Sweden - AP

– It’s a tragic and macabre story, said Detective Tommy Johannesson by police in Kinna to Aftonbladet.

When police arrived at the man’s house and opened the door they were met by a terrible smell. The man was attacked by his own dogs, and have been partially eaten. The dogs are of Caucasian race ovtjarka. Police killed two dogs on site.

If it were the dogs that killed the man, or if there have been other people in the house, is currently unknown.

– He had been a while, but we do not know how long. We also do not know the exact cause of death, says Tommy Johannesson.

The dead man, who is known to the police already, was autopsied yesterday.

- We can not rule out that he has been the victim of a crime. The autopsy will hopefully give us an answer. Whether it is a natural death, or it is a crime behind. Then we will proceed with an investigation, says Tommy Johannesson.

Caucasian ovtjarka is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. It originates from the area between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and was used to guard and protect shepherds and their flocks of sheep and cattle and shepherd families and dwellings.

In an article in the Swedish TV Program Assignment investigation in 2009 the breed was criticized as being aggressive.
