Way back in 2011 VideoLAN released its first application on the App Store for iOS devices, VLC. The application was a success. It let users play videos in any format on your iPhone and iPad, and unlike Apple’s own video player devoured all of the formats. The joy was short lived however, and it was not long before Apple said it violated their policies, and removed the app from the App Store.
Now, the popular application reappeared on the heavily protected app store for Apple and promise exactly what it did in 2011: Easy playback, broad format support and no cost.
“VLC for iOS” to support the same formats as the regular PC and Mac version, and also boasts nettverkstrømming, Dropbox integration and instant adjustment of saturation and gamma values. You can also share files over WiFi using the browser.
VideoLAN says the app will work on devices using iOS 5.1 or later, but you have an old iPhone or iPad, you can probably expect that playback is not always silky smooth. The reason for this is, according to MacStories that third-party applications can use features hardware acceleration for video playback without being hit by Apple’s format limitation.
