Wednesday 26 June police went into the house of the American football player and arrested him, prompting the New England Patriots employer to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the case. Should he, however, be found guilty of premeditated murder, he risks ultimately life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Massachusetts abolished the death penalty in 1982.
