Øystein Sørensen, professor of history at the University of Oslo, for support from the Research Council for research into mind the work of Anders Behring Breivik, but was rejected, writes Morgenbladet.
Sørensen want to track Brevik and other right-wing ideology back to the interwar period. He thinks he sees a parallel to Nazi emergence before World War II in the Weimar Republic, the Nazis and the Communists instigated and stimulated each other’s world views.
– There is a risk that extremist movements will grow strong social disapproval, and then fight each other with violence in Norway and Western Europe. Currently, Norway very fortunate, but there is no reason to believe that these trends will not get hit too. Breivik wanted to trigger a conflict with its spectacular terrorist act, but he did not succeed, says the professor. He believes that support for research council should embrace wider than it does today.
CEO of Research Council, Hallén, would not comment on the processing of the application to Sorensen, but emphasizes that more research on societal has been the most important for research council after 22 July. (© NTB)
