– Sad sight
Widow Siri Bjercke think it is a sad sight and says that many believe the same.
– I understand that survivors who have family and maybe a child, buried here, think it is cruel to come here.
She believes the result will be good, but think it is sad to see the graveyard from 1928 in current condition.
– A grave yard can not be treated as an ordinary construction site. There is so much emotion and grief associated with such a place that a grave yard with treated with respect.
If reusing near 1,700 graves
The cause of the extensive construction work, due to an upgrade of the grave yard.
A few years ago was the graveyard considered full but now, new technology that the area can be used again.
This means that all the tombstones removed from the cemetery and that it recorded GPS positions for the placing.
– The reason is that we now have the opportunity to take away all the pulp that is not appropriate and fill in with new soil, said churchwarden in Vågan, Kjersti Johansen.
Across the country, there are currently a major challenge to find enough land for burial grounds and with the new technology, new cemeteries established over the old.
But that work to float area of the cemetery has taken time, sorry verger.
– I will regret that information has not reached everyone and that it probably has been a little lacking. It is highly regrettable. We do everything we can to correct it.
– Difficult for many
Back at the grave yard is Bjercke glad that graveyard again can be used, but hope that the bereaved may soon visit the graves again.
– This is difficult for many.
