El-ferries will provide significant environmental benefits – NRK

– Norway is the world leader when it comes to the transition to electric vehicles. A similar grip we can take also the ferry traffic, says research director at SINTEF, Røkke.

The world’s first battery-powered ferry called Ampere, and have gone in traffic over the Sognefjord since February this year. The technology is developed and manufactured by Siemens in Trondheim, and now the company wants to get electric ferries on schedule also on the stretch Flakk-Rørvik in Trøndelag.

– In these circuits one uses today gas and produces electricity on board . With our advanced technology we use instead of batteries with energy from the power grid on land. We fill stream right on the tank, such as with an electric car, says sales consultant at Siemens, Ketil Aagesen.

Both environmentally friendly and economical

Today’s ferries on the route Flakk-Rørvik release annual CO2 corresponding 5000 cars. A shift to electric ferries will also save the environment for nitrogen oxide (NOX).

– The local NOX emissions from today’s ferries will year equivalent to 135,000 cars. With battery-powered ferries reduced emissions to zero, says Aagesen.

A study by Siemens and mijøstiftelsen Bellona shows that 70 percent of the country’s ferries also will be more profitable on battery or hybrid operation.

– Although investment costs are higher on this type of ferries, will be in within a decade more than halve the operating costs.

– Norway should be a world leader in electric ferries

It is the County Council in Oslo that treats ferry concession on Flakk-Rørvik. Recently adopted county committee so strict emissions requirements that in practice only electricity ferries that can meet them.

– Here opens up great opportunities for technology exports and high-tech jobs, says Røkke at SINTEF.

– What lies in the documents is that it should be introduced electric ferries from 2019, says the Green Party in January Bojer Vindheim, which sits in both county committee and county council.

Climate Director at SINTEF, Nils A. Røkke, believes Norway has everything it takes to be a world leader in electric ferries.

– We have an strong tradition in the maritime and we are the world’s most electrified society. This combination means that together we can develop this into a technology with great potential and large catchment area.
