Hundreds of balloons will provide internet to the world’s poor – Dagbladet.no

(Dagbladet): Internet giant Google’s secret Superlab, Google X, launched two years ago plans for his balloon project “project loon.”

Two years later, the goal is still the same: Using Balloon Powered wireless internet, they want to give the developing world access to høyhastghetsinternett.

Stepping up

Wednesday revealed the company that they are stepping up the project, and that they now will focus on Indonesia, where most of the population is not connected to the internet, NTB reported.

Only 42 percent of the country’s 250 million inhabitants have access to the internet. The population is scattered over 17,000 islands, making the country ideal for testing balloon project.

“Project loon ‘has since its launch at Google X, been taken over by the company’s new subsidiary Alphabet Inc., who takes care of projects that are not included in Google’s core business.

– Loads computing power

The airy project to provide internet to the entire world population using the balloons can be heard floating out. According to Google to balloons could be a danger to civil aviation. It avoids the by balloons hovering around 60,000 feet above the ground, while using weather data to predict where the balloons will fly.

– We solve the problem with some complex algorithms and lots of computing power, said the company in a press release when the project was launched.

Internet balloons is still under testing. It is therefore uncertain when they will be able to offer Internet deck lift to users in Indonesia.
