There might come a few years too late, since free streaming music via subscription is the major trend among Norwegian music lovers a day. But the service iTunes Match is nevertheless quite innovative, because it makes what was previously pirated material into legal music quality.
service has been available in the U.S. for several years, but has spent over two years on the road over the dam. It has obviously taken the time to get through the grind of necessary permits in Norway and Scandinavia. But now it’s here.
Out of gray
It has always been the case that Apple Itunes program (frequently used on both Mac and PC) have allowed you to play pirated mp3 files. But these have remained in a legal gray area, at least if you download pirated copies from the web instead of copying your music.
iTunes Match scans your hard drive and find the titles of all music, whether pirated or not. So this is matched against all the original files as artists and record companies even sell through Itunes. Even if you have an inferior version of a file that is sold through iTunes, you will be registered as the owner of the music. Then you are allowed to download original, if you have subscribed.
All over the place
Original Music can now be downloaded as many times as you want, all the devices you have (PC, Mac, Iphone, Ipad, Apple TV). Itunes then acts as a cloud, so you will have your entire library available anywhere. The files can also be listened to on Android devices, as you can store them in an open format. But then you have to choose a program other than iTunes, as there is for these platforms.
special is that also the music that iTunes does not have better copies, be it their own pirate recordings, or quirky bootleg versions from buddy’s LP record collection will be uploaded and made available to all your devices. But you must therefore pay the subscription for 249 million annually to have continuous access to them. In return, you will not have to worry about your mp3 collection blows, if a hard drive or mobile phone crashes or disappears.
The special arrangement is made possible through agreements with copyright organizations. You can read more about how to practically do about making music illegally into legal tunes here.
