Google buys another prominent robot company - Hardware.no

search giant Google likes to have a hand in most things, and have long practiced a relatively aggressive acquisition strategy to have as many legs to stand on in the future.

last field I want to position themselves in the selvsyrte robots, and recently we were able to announce that the company has acquired seven companies developing various types of robots, from simple to more advanced variations.

now writes The New York Times that Google has expanded the portfolio with one more company specializing in robotics, namely the Boston Dynamics.

Stock robots

Boston Dynamics is a recognized player on the field and is known primarily for autonomous robots that are able to simulate motion behavior of animals and humans, with a unique ability to maintain balance on their own.

One of its most famous models are “BigDog”, a kind of “robot-ass” with four legs that were developed for the U.S. military to help soldiers carry heavy equipment through rugged terrain.

recently, Boston Dynamics also developed “WildCat”, another four-legged creature that can run at high speeds, not to mention “Humanoid” Atlas, a very human-like robot that can perform complex tasks on their own.

Focus on fast product development

It is unclear exactly what plans Google has with its recent acquisitions, and what products we possibly can expect to see in the future.

Andy Rubin, Android developer who is head of Google’s new robot commitment, however, has said that he does not expect a long-term product development phase, which may mean that it will show up for any type of commercial robotic products before too long.
