French authorities have now agreed to test the artificial heart for patients. At the heart sits a Norwegian touch sensor.

Norwegian firm Memscap supply pressure sensor to be used in the artificial heart, and the “innards” says SINTEF for.

Sigurd Moe at SINTEF ICT, said that they have worked with Memscapde last ten years.

– We develop processes and design for the small silicon chips that are included in touch sensor, and Memscap assemble together and packages them in a way that they are very stable. MiNaLab our produce also the Customized pressure element. The pressure sensors have now been used in aircraft such as height gauges and pressure sensor to be used in heart, are of the same type.

From outer space to the human heart

– Reliability is a key word, says Jan Hallenstvedt in Memscap.

– Both in a plane and in a human body needs to know that the sensor is standard and does not fail.

sensors from Memscap has gained a good reputation internationally as extremely stable and reliable, and it did well on promotion when NASA decided to use the Norwegian sensors in the spacecraft Curiosity rover that landed on Mars in 2012.

Hallenstvedt say they have delivered sensors carmat many years, and it has been a long road until the result can now go out with.

– Two years ago carmat performed experiments on animals with great success, and after they have been tested on a few patients. But it was not until this spring they got approval, and announced publicly that they are in the process of medical testing in full scale. This summer we sent therefore a few hundred sensors down to the continent, he said.
