Apple introduced voice control of mobile autumn 2011. The Norwegian originally developed Siri technology was portrayed as the most important news when the iPhone 4S was released.

Store for two years
The so-called digital assistant makes it possible to talk to the phone and ask questions on large and small. Recordings sent to Apple’s servers for analysis. Based on this analysis service tries to answer to the best of ability.

Last week, Wired revealed how long Apple takes care of the sound recording. It turns out that the company takes care of the contents of up to two years.

Thus, in fact everything so far talked by calls to Siri still be stored on Apple’s servers.

Inspectorate respond
This is done for the sake of testing and improving the service, said a spokesperson for Apple to the American technology magazine.

All correspondence with Siri saved with a unique identification number that represents the individual customer. Only after six months will be anonymised recordings. According to Wired retains Apple audio files of up to 18 months after that.

– This may be illegal, says Bjørn Erik Thon in the Inspectorate to digi.no Friday afternoon.

Apple does with to store the recordings were then new to him, and a relationship he clearly responds to.

– Yes, very much. Firstly, I think very few, if any, of those who use Siri was aware of this.

That takes some form of storage when asking questions to Siri, and a processor in the rear, Thon think that people probably understand.

– but hardly at all raised will be stored for six months. Stores also content, and it is of course something I react to that taken care of.

If that’s the way that Apple allows to develop the service further and testing, so they provide to Wired, this are reasons Inspectorate often encounter from the major nettjenestegigantene, then Thon difficult to imagine that they need to retain data for so long.

And thus, saving the practice being illegal under Norwegian privacy laws, which have clear provisions that the data must be deleted immediately purpose of treatment is met.

Shoots case
Bjørn Erik Thon is very keen to anchor such matters with their colleagues in the other European data audits.

Now he promises that Siri storage will be addressed at the earliest opportunity.

– We have a Nordic meeting in three weeks time. Then it is natural that we take up this matter, also possibly further data with supervisors in other European countries, says Data’s Director of digi.no.

He feels confident that they have the power to force Apple to modifying storage practices, as they also have experience of winning up to large international corporations as well earlier.
