Do you know what "savages" mean? - Rana Blad

Solveig Wikstrom from Mo i Rana is editor of the Norwegian Dictionary and above average fond of dialect. One of them is the “savages,” which has roots in Rana and Helgeland.

Wikstrøm has brought the word into the dictionary under the legend: “single person”.

– Where it’s far from people, they Skraelings. The example on the slip of paper from the 1970s came straight from Rana, “It va carry nån get skrælenga,” she tells the site forskning.no.

Other places in Norway mean people that savages are frail or pitiful.

The third sense is from Old Norse, a term for Inuit and Indigenous Vinland, according dictionary of the Norwegian vernacular and nynorske Confession .
