Many mobile phone manufacturers have come with “mini” versions of their top models, but common to most has been that the manufacturer has cut sharply in processor performance, screen resolution and functionality compared with the top model with almost the same name. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini a far weaker and less well-equipped phone than the top model Galaxy S4. It actually has so little in common with the original model, we believe it is very limit to speculative Samsung to call it a mini version of S4.
Sony has thankfully thought quite differently, and made a mini model that shares almost all the specifications with top of the range Sony Xperia Z1. And instead of calling it a “mini” as Samsung and HTC are doing, they called model Xperia Z1 Compact .
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact has the same processor, same graphics chip, same camera, same amount of storage and working memory, and is almost point for point identical to the Z1. The only thing that distinguishes them significantly from each other, screen size and battery capacity.
price is also 400-500 million lower than for the large Z1 model.
Waterproof Top Model
Like the Sony Xperia Z1 Z1 Compact is one IP58-certified phone, which means that it is dust proof and that it will endure to be 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. The premise is that you take care to close all the watertight doors around the phone.
the phone is waterproof is extremely practical in a country like Norway. If it should rain, you do not have to think that the phone can be destroyed – and it is not susceptible to moisture damage due to condensation when, for example, the phone in the inside pocket of the jacket or leave it lying on the bathroom while you shower.
Compact
While Xperia Z1 has a size of 144 x 74 millimeters, then Z1 Compact only 127 x 64.9 millimeters high. “Footprint” is slightly larger than the iPhone 5S, but not so much. It is just over 4 inches taller, while it is 6.3 inches wider.
The phone is well in hand. . Photo: Kurt Lekanger, Amobil.noZ1 Compact is not as slim as Z1. The thickness is increased from 8.5 millimeters at Z1 to 9.5 millimeters for Z1 Compact. That phone feels a bit thick, was also something we noticed when we first got it in your hands. It is noticeably thicker than both the iPhone 5S and Xperia Z1. That said, so does the special beveled design around the edges that the phone looks a little thinner than it is.
Compact design, high weight for its size, and solid building materials makes the phone is very good in the hand and you get the good quality feel that unfortunately often lacking in some of the competitors’ phones.
metal frame around the phone helping to give your phone an exclusive touch. This framework also serves several phone antennas. In the middle on the right side you will find the characteristic silvery, round power button as all Sony mobiles have. On the same side of the phone are also volume buttons and a camera key. The headphone jack is on the top, while the left side is a Micro-USB connector, place the SIM card as well as space for a MicroSD memory card. The connectors are covered by hatches with rubber gaskets, while the headphone jack does not have any weed. It is still waterproof, so water does not enter the phone even if water gets into the headphone jack.
The hatches have rubber gaskets, to prevent water from entering any place. Photo: Kurt Lekanger, Amobil.noOn the left side of the phone there are two charging contacts so you can charge your phone without having to open the door in front of the Micro-USB connector. But charging station you need for this is optional.
Great display – with one minus
Previously, Sony had a problem with viewing angle on their screens. For example, the Xperia Z a kind of milky white “veil” over the screen when you saw the little side. The screens in Sony phones have been getting better, and with Xperia Z1 Compact, the company switched to display based on IPS technology. This is not inferior to other phones with LCD screens at this point – in fact it is one of the best screens we’ve seen in any mobile phone.
Sony uses a technology they call TRILUMINOS display. This is a technology in which the backlight is controlled to be attenuated behind those portions of the screen that should be dark. This is combined with X-Reality Engine, which is a logarithmic image enhancement in real time. The technologies developed by Sony for use in TVs, and the solution contained in the Xperia Z is based on the software – not custom chips.
Picture quality is very good. screen has strong, brilliant colors and impressive both indoors and outdoors.
resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels is lower than the Xperia Z1, which has 1080 x 1920 pixels. But since the screen size is reduced from 5 to 4.3 inches, it matters little. The screen is sharp – and with a pixel density of 342 pixels per inch is the points so small that it would be hard to see them with the naked eye.
It is also worth checking that this is the first of Sony’s phones that come with super-sensitive screen, in addition to being waterproof. That means it can withstand both precipitation and to be serviced without removing your fingers. We could use nails on the screen, but with thin gloves had to press a little hard for the screen to respond. But that was until we found a separate option for “gauntlet mode” in the settings menu. In this screwed increases the sensitivity of the screen so much that you can operate it even with thick gloves. Do you monitor without gloves with this feature turned on, the screen is so sensitive that it often reacts a bit before actually touch the screen with your finger.

Sony screens, however, one problem you will not find on other phones: The screen is coated with a plastic film designed to protect it – and because of the rules in Japan, this film will be there to prevent one gets broken glass fingers on the screen would shatter. The problem with plastic film is that it is not as scratch resistant as a display of such Gorilla Glass type.
By swiping completely left in appmenyen brings up a menu to choose among different sort order for apps.We had Xperia Z1 phones in the newsroom that after a few months are full of scratches and look worn out. It is possible to remove the plastic film, although it sits so tightly that it can be a little difficult to get it loose. But the glass of the screen during the film is not set in with a so-called oleophobic coating – a coating that makes fingerprints and other grease will not stick as well. It allows the monitor without this coating quickly covered with fingerprints, and that the finger does not slide particularly over it. It is also difficult to get away the dirt from the screen, and the screen is dirty, it can sometimes start pressing things by themselves. We have written an article on how you can set up the screen with an agent that makes it just as smoothly as the competitors’ screens – but we nevertheless believe that the protective film is the biggest drawback of Sony mobiles.
Nicely user interface
phone comes with Android 4.3, and Sony have added their own menus on top.
changes compared to the standard Android is not dramatic, so it is relatively easy to work out. But Sony has also created a new way to customize your home screens. You can not find the widgets in the usual appmenyen, but by keeping your finger inside one of the home screens will bring up a menu where you can choose to add multiple home screens, add widgets (which Sony calls “modules”), and change backgrounds or themes. You can also change any of the home screens that will appear by default when you press the Home button.
When you press the button to go to appoversikten, you have the opportunity to choose to sort apps alphabetically, by how often you have used apps, for when they were installed, or custom order. You can also create folders in both appoversikten and home screens.
the whole, we think the user interface and menu design is very successful.
