Now Google into your eye - Aftenposten

You probably know Google Glass, the smart glasses that can guide you, take pictures and more. But Google does not seem to be content to just take a seat on the nose. Now they enter the eye, with a smart contact lens.

It should be noted that this is not just the next step in Google Glass development. Contact lenses are in fact very specific functionality. It will measure glucose levels in tear fluid in the eye, and thus could warn you of high or low blood sugar.

This is thus a tool for diabetics, as this lens will drop to measure blood sugar by sticking themselves to the blood. Instead, the lens will pass information wirelessly, such as a smartphone.

Will integrate warning light

There are also plans to integrate a LED in the lens, so you can get a notice that your blood sugar level is moving up or down without having to check the phone. A warning light in the lens, in other words.

aim is thus to make it possible to control glucose in a simple way that does not involve testing blood.

The smart lens is currently under development, so it’s hardly possible to obtain such a hurry. Google is in talks with the U.S. health authority, and they have plans to team up with a partner who has experience in getting medical devices on the market. When it becomes available, is highly uncertain.


Not the first smart lenses

This is not the first time someone working with smart contact lenses. American E-Vision owns a patent on a contact lens that electronically focus based on where you focus your eyes.

This patent was applied for already in 2003 and granted in 2005. Other jobs with contact lenses with integrated ability to display images, and in 2011 it showcased a contact lens 1:32 x 32 pixel OLED display integrated.
