[Amobil.no] Today was eventually update many RT users have been waiting for. With Office 2013 Outlook as an integral part of the operating system on RT-levels, this is undoubtedly the tablet that fills most of a regular PC’s functions. Or to put it another way – no other tablet can equally replace a PC.
Have faith in Windows RT
Now there are only a few days to Microsoft’s new Surface models will go on sale. Then release both a Pro and RT model. RT model will be called Surface2 and will of course have the updated OS on a place from day one. Pro model is thinner, lighter and get twice the life on one charge. Thus it comes to memory even more of a regular tablet, even though there is talk of a PC in tablet format.
But Microsoft has, unlike most others, still believe that there is a market for RT-boards. They should be correct enough heat Surface2 without RT in the name, so they have had until now.
This is not a PC
RT levels are short, tablets with a different processor architecture than PCs. Boards using ARM chips, which have a different instruction set than the Intel-based processors in a PC. To run a computer program on an ARM machine, is like trying to play a CD in a cassette.
It is also the reason you until now have not got Outlook Surface RT, despite the fact that you otherwise have access to Office on the board. Outlook is not running as a normal app, but as a program in a window on the desktop, as it also does on the PC.
From today’s Windows RT 8.1 ready for download, and you have an RT-fold from before the update is free.
Following the PC version – will start button
It’s nice to see that the many new features of the PC version of 8.1 can also be found in the RT version. Many have missed the Start button from the Windows 7 It’s here, albeit in a slightly different version than on Windows 7 Clicking on it seems the vindowstasten on the keyboard. But hold on a second, or right click with the mouse, you will get a more extensive menu.
It’s not really new, but the feature is now more accessible.
Resize tiles
In RT 8.1, you can also get the menu tiles in more sizes than before. As before, these tiles display information from apps they represent, but what they can see is depends on how much you choose to do the tile.
search field has also received an overhaul. Now you have something called Bing Smart Search. This search is made on the Internet, the PC, the apps and SkyDrive. Skydrive is cloud storage service to Microsoft and everyone who registers to get 7GB of free storage.
More apps at once – but not on our version
Windows 8.1 allows for up to 4 apps on each screen, but our “old” RT-board manages only 2 In return, we can scale the width of them as we wish.
Windows 8.1 allows for up to 4 apps on each screen, but our “old” RT-board manages only 2 In return, we can scale the width of them as we wish.
With Windows RT 8.1 should be able to open multiple applications simultaneously. Up until now you have only been able to have two windows at once, but now increased this to four. But you can not put one window in each corner. Instead, you get four narrow windows next to each other, provided you have a high enough screen resolution.
Surface RT tackles still only two apps side by side, but you can at least make them equal.
Network storage is central
board has also gotten better cloud integration. SkyDrive folder can be set as the default storage location for new documents, and it is easier to set up the files you will also have access to when you have no network connection. It is, in other words to have a folder on the board that reflects everything in SkyDrive.
But you can not connect multiple SkyDrive accounts to a user. This opportunity was taken away for a little while ago.
A new feature in 8.1 is the ability to uninstall the same app to many devices simultaneously. The assumption is that you have a same account on the machines.
This is a tablet that is suitable just as much work to entertainment. So has Microsoft added a number of new security solutions in Windows 8.1.
New is that the machine is scanning software before the computer boots, so that it is possible to detect so-called root kits, or malicious code that starts up and masquerade before common virus control comes on. This is not a relevant issue on ARM-based hardware, which you still can not run third party applications outside the so-called sandbox.
It also made changes to the way you attach your computer to a secure network, so you no longer need to be a member of a domain to have access to corporate systems. Instead, IT Manager drop you as a guest with more or less restricted access through the so-called Workplace Join. Here is the same functionality 8.1 RT as it is at 8.1 Pro.
To update
If you have not updated your RT-board already, so you can update in the “Store”. It appeared well enough not recorded on our test board before we had run a Windows Update. This is done by subtracting the right of the screen, select “Settings”, “Change PC Settings” and enter “Winows Update.”
After the update (which updates the OS a) open the “Market” again, and now Windows update be ready.
It takes some time to update, and you have slow connection it will definitely pay off to find a place where the connection is better. There are in fact more than 2 GB of data to be in place. Then you must set up the computer via an supervisor, but when it’s done, you have access to all documents, pictures and other content that you have on the board before the update. Applications must properly enough be downloaded again, but it goes by itself.
RT or Pro?
‘s nyehten is undoubtedly Outlook, which provides complete Office Package at RT. It lacks proper enough some templates in PowerPoint and some macros in Excell, but in practice we see this as a full-fledged PC. Until we get the urge to install a fun program we like to use.
The new Surface trays will go on sale 22 October and then the Surface Pro thinner and lighter, in addition to that get better battery life. But Office is not included, and the price is much stiffer than the RT board, which is even lighter, thinner and more battery friendly
Need full PC functionality, the choice is easy. But are you just looking for an easier “office computer” RT will be a good option. And remember, you can use Remote Desktop on RT as well, and thus gain access to more powerful hardware without having it on board.
