All electronic communications can be monitored. But it need not be foreign powers spies behind. Phone Kidnapping is well known among local police and people who will push us advertising.
“The Prime Minister and Parliament monitored”, writes Aftenposten.
But it is taking in. This we do not know.
What we do know is that it is likely that it is set up illegal equipment that can tap information from mobiles in downtown Oslo. National Security Authority has by Aftenposten’s revelation country that they think it is so.
But we do not know what any equipment is used. We can not know whether there has been surveillance. We do not know whether the Prime Minister or other affected.
Exposed in use in many countries
Equipment which can drain phones are not new. For many years, fake base stations has been in use. Now in the past is the current technology featured including leaks of Edward Snowden.
Aftenposten has revealed also revealed abroad. The American press did in the summer the same type job that Aftenposten meritorious made in Oslo.
With a CryptoPhone, same type of equipment that Aftenposten used, found experts that measurements indicated a series of false base stations in the US who can tap phones . No shot with illegal equipment. Right now runs one of the companies that sell restraint around the country to check people’s neighborhoods.
American sources also claim that intelligence authorities use the method of aircraft. But most of the cases that have reached the public has come as a result of right proceeding against criminals nab the local police using telephone kidnapping.
This method is attractive for it required little work. About hunted a criminal can get notification when he shows up somewhere, for example when approaching downtown. Police do not monitor, they can only get as a pling on the phone when the person is nearby.
Regular equipment in Norway
Also in Norway know we police use such equipment. Dagbladet yesterday confirmed from several sources that the police on special occasions have used false base stations in investigation cases.
That this is relevant and familiar as a method shown not least request the Minister of Justice operates and treats right now. Police have applied for an extended right to just such use.
It does not quite unnatural to think of police after Aftenposten disclosures. It is these we know user equipment as it found traces of. We also know from previous revelations that the police can not be excluded adopting methods without approval.
It is of course a lot of problems related to police use of such equipment. Experiences from the United States have shown that the equipment is not reliable. It happens constantly that the police pointed in the wrong direction. Innocent Americans have experienced dramatic arrest while neighbor really was the one who’d taken, documenting civil rights organizations.
Someone who will sell anything
In China the problem of kidnapping of phones to people tremendously. Mainly it is about players who will send you advertising, according to technology magazine The Verge. The biggest mobile company has captured more than 13 million fake messages sent from false base stations only during the spring. Scams messages are also a big part of the problem.
Commercial interests of many kinds can have good use for a fake base station that can send information to people who are inside right at their mall, concert or restaurant. There are many possibilities to customize advertising, counting people and recording habits. But not this is legal.
In “best” case, our Norwegian case revolve around more innocent stuff. According Aftenposten journalist found dig group out that the equipment they used gave many false alarms. One can not exclude that people with bad coverage has acquired a signal amplifier that turns out as a false base station. Nor can we ignore the fact that habit criminals adopting the method in an attempt to stay ahead of the police.
Much remains unclear
We need more information. And now matter fortunately investigated. It remains to see if there is coverage for Aftenposten allegations that the Prime Minister and finance communities are monitored.
Yet Aftenposten work valuable. The revelations have given us startling information about possible monitoring of the capital. The existence of such security holes is nevertheless very important to be aware of, even if the holes are not necessarily abused – yet.
The public opinion is left with after spionavsløringene is that the agencies we should trust in such matters , National Security Agency and the Police Security Service, seems to be behind.
In any case, from what they say publicly. Presumably they know much more than they say.
But it had a newspaper to make us all aware of a huge security risk which is not only a threat to Erna Solberg.
This is technology that can befall hvermannsen. And it is in many ways more serious if it is ordinary people like you and I deceived.
