Google plans balloon networks - ABC News

Balloons sending wireless internet

4.8 billion has yet to access the internet. Could this be the solution?

Can balloons be the solution to give the world the internet? Google’s new project is looking into the possibility.

One day it might be possible to get online wherever you are – and the signal comes from balloons in the atmosphere. We might call it the Google moon landing …

Google has given the project a bit humorous name ‘Loon’, and the trial balloons have already been sent up into the sky. 30 test balloons were released over New Zealand this week, and they hovering at the border of space.

ambition is that these balloons will one day be able to provide global wireless network, even in areas where for practical or economic reasons, the internet currently.

– We believe it is possible to build a network of balloons flying high up in the stratosphere and provides internet access to people under, said the head of the project, Mike Cassidy, in a statement.

balloons is 15 meters wide and 12 meters high, and they are filled with helium. It receives signals from the test balloons using an internet receiver the size of a football.

Only a limited volunteers have so much access to the service.
