Apple’s big developer conference, WWDC 2013 was held yesterday. For once there were relatively few leaks prior to the conference, but a number of product innovations that were presented, was still expected. This is because Apple usually come with updated versions of existing products with a relatively steady rate.

A key novelty is the next version of Apple’s operating system for Mac. It’s called OS X Mavericks and is now available in a test version for developers. While the nine previous versions (Mac) OS X has been named after big cats, Apple has now apparently moved to a new theme, namely place in California. Mavericks is a surfing spot north of the state.

According to Apple to OS X Mavericks carrying more than 200 new features as they become available for Mac users through the Mac App Store this fall.

Map
example is Apple’s mapping service now integrated throughout the new operating system, so they can appear in conjunction with tools such as Mail, Contacts and Calendar. The maps can also be integrated with third party applications using a new programming interface. It should be possible to plan trips to the maps Mavericks and send them to iPhone.

The upcoming version of OS X will be more energy efficient than previous versions in that it using the Apple calls the “Timer Coalescing “groups of low-level operations so that the processor can spend more time in the low-energy mode. Moreover, “Nap App” function reduces the CPU usage of open applications that are not used at the moment. This shall not go beyond performance.

Compressed
If system memory is starting to fill up, the operating system will use memory compression of information that is not used, so that more memory is available for the active software. If it is again necessary for the compressed data, the decompressed again. Apple promises that this will make the system faster and more responsive.

Mavericks get OS X finally better support for multiple monitors. For example, users can now easily select which screen applications in window or full screen to appear in. Via Apple TV and AirPlay can also be used as additional HDTV screen. The menu bar and the Dock is now available on all screens.

Files can now be organized using tags. This is done in the Finder in iCloud or filing of new documents. The tags will appear in the Finder sidebar.

It should now be possible to merge multiple Finder windows into one tabbed window.

Safari
Also the Safari browser to have been renewed – especially in terms of speed and energy efficiency – the latter partly because of support for Nap App. It promised improved memory efficiency and JavaScript performance. Each tab will now be its own process, which among other things will provide better stability.

More information will now be able to “hang on” to the encrypted iCloud keychain. This includes login information for websites, credit card details and WLAN password.

It should now be possible to answer or delete messages, and respond to FaceTime calls via notifications, without leaving the application you already use. The user should also be notified of things that have happened while the computer has been in sleep mode.

New Mac
Apple unveiled yesterday also new MacBook Air and Mac Pro models.

News of MacBook Air is first and foremost that they have adopted Intel’s fourth-generation Core processors, which will provide significantly better graphics performance and battery life. They also come with support for 802.11ac WLAN-based and up to 45 percent faster SSD than before. As previously machines come with 11 or 13 inch screen and Core i5 or i7 processor. The price starts at 7790 dollars, and the machines are already ready for delivery.

The next generation of Mac Pro is not ready for primetime, but will go on sale later this year. The machine will be designed as a cylinder with a height of only 25.1 cm. The volume is reduced to one eighth, compared with the current generation. It still has room for Intel Xeon processors with up to twelve cores in total, two AMD FirePro graphics processors and PCI Express-based SSD. All expansion, however, will have to happen on the outside of the cabinet, for example, using the six Thunderbolt 2 ports.
